Mountain Biking the Heaphy Track, Kahurangi National Park

The Heaphy Track is open again to bikers on the 1st of May 2012 Until the 31st of September 2012.

From the Kohaihai River just north of Karamea to the Heaphy Hut is a great day ride taking 1.5 to 3 hours each way depending on how many great photos you take and your fitness levels. This Heaphy Hut is always a nice hut to stay in to make this a overnight-er - MAKE SURE YOU BOOK YOUR HUTS BEFORE YOU GO!! This part of the track is a grade 3 and can be ridden by most riders - last year my 2 girls 10 and 12 road this as an over night ride and realy enjoyed them selves. Its on the to do again for this year.

A chopper ride from Karamea to the Browns Hut end of the track is a breath taking flight and well worth the money.This ride takes 2 to 3 days at an enjoyable pace       -The Heaphy track is a grade 4+ this has been up graded from last year as it was underestermated by some riders. Please remember the full track is not recommended as a day trip as the rivers can rise quickly and with out warning, no night riding is allowed and you never know when you may have to push your bike if you have a mechanical breakdown. - Over night and Emergency gear is always recommended!

The helicopter comfortably seats three passengers and bikes, and can transport you to Browns Hut at 'the Collingwood end' of the Heaphy Track- no need for shuttles or extra biking! The helicopter trip takes less than 1/2 an hour. Price is $750 per trip - bikes are well looked after and don't touch!!
