Our shop is located on the corner of Palmerston Street and Wakefield Street, Westport - 234 Palmerston Street. Historically, the site of sports shops in Westport dating back to the 1950's. Our current premises was purpose built for the business back in 2013.
We are lucky to be based on the West coast of the South Island, the outdoors in Buller District is bursting with opportunities to explore and start adventures. If you are looking for something special contact us.
Expert local knowledge combined with passion
We can get your adventure kicked off right, with local knowledge on hunting, diving and fishing tips and the only fully equipped bike workshop in town. We are out and about doing it in the district and into all the seasonal activities year round.

Mountain Biking - The Buller area has many tracks that you will love: the Old Ghost Road, The Denniston Plateau, Charming Creek and the Heaphy (in winter). Coast Outdoors has a full work shop and bike mechanic service. Get your bike serviced or re-stock up on parts and accessories. We fit and sell tubes and tyres too.

Fishing - The mighty Buller River boasts some stunning fishing including trout and kahawai and even snapper at the river mouth. You will enjoy surf casting from the beaches for rig, snapper, gurnard and more. For fishing tips and hot spots and the biggest range of fishing gear on the coast including salted bait. Pop in and see us. In season, whitebait is a local delicacy that attracts thousands of people to our pristine rivers and lagoons in pursuit of white gold.
Hunting - Goats, deer and pigs as well as small game like hares and ducks in season. Pockets of fallow deer can be found around Reefton. Chamois inhabit the Buller Gorge and around Springs/Rahu areas. The rest of the deer population is Red. Hunting in public land, virgin native bush is an ever popular kiwi passtime that provides amazing free range meat for your table and memories for life.
Diving/spearfishing - The shore diving around Buller can be very productive. Paua, mussels, kina, crayfish can be gathered from rocky reefs and points along the entire coastline. Good beds of pipi and cockles are around Okari, Karamea and Orowaiti. Spearos can find clear water over summer mainly and load up on butterfish, tarakihi, snapper and kingfish out at the Steeples and Kaurangi reefs.
Hiking / Day Walks and camping - From family friendly short walks to multi-day hikes. Camping is popular in the wilderness, tops and at coastal sites from Punakaiki, Fox River and up Karamea.

"I've spent my life in the south island; fishing, hunting, camping, boating & 
whitebaiting and doing all things outside. Bringing this experience to my work is exciting and rewarding - there's always plenty to talk about, learn and share when it comes to being passionate about the outdoors.
In my work life i've done all sorts including accounting, electrical, marine sales, web & technology, owned several small businesses and more recently a stint selling thermal optics. Owning and running Coast Outdoors is now a passion project that excites me and gels with my main hobbies. Come in for a yarn and to say gidday."
Austin O'Toole - Workshop Manager
Austin is the real deal young outdoorsman with a love for anything outside - including fishing, hunting, whitebaiting, diving, boats and biking.
His wicked DIY abilities and sound knowledge of mountain bikes saw him nab an afterschool job at Coast Outdoors where he runs the tools and keeps the local bike population serviced and running smoothly most afternoons.
Austin is a born and bred Westport local, with a strong knowledge of the local hunting area, the coastline and the hot diving and floundering spots.
As well as a hunger for learning and improving his practical skills, Austin loves yarning about all things outdoors and when not working at Coast Outdoors or at school, he keeps busy doing building work for his family business, Jennian Homes Westcoast, or away out and about on hunts and missions and playing rugby.
